So it's official. After a year of being at home, I will be going out to work! I can't really go into details about what I'll be doing but it's something to do with the Ministry of Defence. I will sign the appointment letter this Monday (28th June) and the following Monday (4th June) I am likely to start the job.
I'm really grateful to God for giving me this opportunity to find a job like this given that with the NUS degree I have, there aren't exactly a truckload of job opportunities in the first place. As I told the interviewing panel at the final round interview, I knew that five years had passed since I graduated from NUS, and in those five years, I hadn't really done anything relating to what I had studied.
I went back to SBC today to return my mailbox and locker keys. I bumped into a classmate there and I told him what I had been up to since I left. He told me that he would be meeting for breakfast tomorrow some of our other classmates who had graduated and would be returning to their home countries soon. He invited me to come along and I accepted his invitation. It will be good to see them again and it will bring some closure and finality to the events since May 2006.
Yesterday BSF leaders' training was held at the church which will be hosting the class. I can't say what church it is just yet, as we can only officially mention its name after next week's training session. Anyway, I had arranged to give one of my co-leaders a lift to the church, and as it turned out, I gave two of them a lift. We made it to the church in quite good time, though we have to eat dinner a little quicker the next time.
A funny thing happened. Waiting for a lift to the 3rd floor where the meeting was being held, a familiar looking girl joined us at the lift landing. The lift came, and we all went in. I couldn't help wondering where I had seen her before. One of us asked her if she was coming for the BSF thing, and she said yes. I was kind of puzzled but when she told us her name, it finally clicked. It turns out she had taken a Thai class (not by me though) around 2 years ago. Fortunately she didn't find it odd that I was looking at her inquisitively as she also found me familiar. Haha.
The training went alright. Once again I was sitting next to the teaching leader. Once again I was sitting in the way of the draft of the aircon, a good thing at first but later on it got a little cold. I felt a little strange and I had two instances where I momentarily spaced out. I was feeling alright though and when it came to my turn to practice leading the discussion, I did reasonably well, as did all of us. I couldn't resist being a little cheeky with one of the questions, bringing some mirth to the discussion, but I did point out afterwards that in retrospect I wouldn't use that kind of humour in a real class setting, acknowledging that there was a better way to approach a question like that. After class, I gave a lift to 4 of the leaders. It was alright though I must figure out a more direct way of making it to the first destination.
On Sunday I went to church as usual and after that I had breakfast with Jasmine and some of the other music ministry people. I found myself eating a healthy version of kuey chap. Hee. After breakfast, I went back to church to await the opening of Mambo Billiards. I would normally have had a Thai class to teach, but as Hermon BP was celebrating Parents' Day, they asked for a postponement. So it was that I was thinking of playing some pool, then heading for home for a nap. As it turned out, I spent nearly 5 hours there, playing some pretty good pool though I was plagued by a few careless shots, which wasn't really unexpected. 2 of the hours were spent playing a guy called Martin who asked me if he would like to join him. He's very accurate and as I wasn't up to my usual standards of accuracy, I just managed to win half the racks we played. Some of the racks were of really high standard in terms of clearing tables and safety play.
Naturally I was physically spent when I went back to church for English class. I had decided to go to a completely phonetic method of teaching English for my student and to my surprise, I found myself enjoying it, especially when I was writing out the transliterated sounds in Thai script on the whiteboard.
I was the last one to dinner where I was sitting between Weijia and Jasmine. Weijia is standing in for Angie over this month. She used to teach English before she went on her exchange stint in the US. Anyway it was nice catching up with her as we waited for her bus afterwards.
On Saturday, my CG met for prayer, then we joined Nat for lunch to celebrate his birthday at a North Indian restaurant in Peninsula Plaza. It was good to see him again. He asked some of us if we could help him to fetch his fiancee's relatives to church for their wedding. But he didn't ask me to do anything. I thought he would ask me to do something for his wedding but he didn't. I dropped subtle hints about other weddings which I would be attending but not doing anything at, but he was oblivious to my prompting. Finally, after lunch, I was walking with him to the MRT station when I flat out asked him who his best man was going to be. He was surprised by my question but recovered his composure and said that it was me and that he meant to ask me but it had slipped his mind. Haha. Anyway it will be my pleasure to be Nat's best man. However since he'll be married, I now have to find someone else to be my future best man. Oh well.
During lunch, my big mouth CG mates mentioned to Nat that I was interested in someone from his church. I refused to confirm or deny anything there and then, but later on when we were walking to the train I told him everything. He offered to help me find out what I wanted to know (see previous post). Incidentally, he's already come back to me on that.
To say that life is good is just about right. To say that God is good is a complete understatement. But there is no doubt that God is good, more than you or I can ever know or comprehend.
Oh, my mean weight has fallen by a kilo. Hmm. Feeling a little flu-ey now but in response I am detoxing with plenty of green tea.
Thank you Lord, for Your Word, a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path!
And so, post 200 concludes. Come to think of it, it's what I meant to post all along when I was thinking of posting something special.
